William Henry Harrison Lee papers, 1862-1939 ; (bulk, 1862-1863).

Civil War correspondence of William Henry Harrison Lee to wife, Mathursa Fowler Lee, in Greenville District, S.C., describing his movements in the Army from the vicinity of Charleston, S.C., to the Mississippi communities of Canton, Meridian, and Yazoo City as part of Gen. States Rights Gist's Brigade. Letters contain descriptions of camp life, comments on the enemy, and news of other South Carolinians serving with Lee in Mississippi; including 17 June 1863, containing one leaf written from Lee to his wife and a second leaf written by brother-in-law John G. Fowler to "My Dear Sister in Christ" and to his wife Sarah; subsequent letters from Fowler written from Chattanooga, Tenn., and Dalton, Ga., discuss uncertainty as to Lee's death in a distant hospital, and arrangements for returning Lee's body to South Carolina. Also includes letter, 10 Feb. [1939], from Lee's daughter [possibly Mary Jane, his youngest] who was living in Marietta (Greenville County, S.C.) to Miss Wil Lou Gray, Columbia, S.C., inquiring re the [Confederate] "Daughters' Home," including the above letters as proof of her eligibility, and explaining the severity of her situation, "I am here suffering for something to eat, bare footed as I can be ... I have outlived all my people and friends ..."
